Our Students Recycle Stale Bread to Raise Awareness on Bread Waste

07.03.2019

With a history as old as human history, bread is one of the most important common nutrients for individuals. Due to the fact that our country is an agricultural country, our age-long nutritional habits and socio-economic structure, the importance of bread is even greater in our nutrition. Nevertheless, approximately 5 million bread loaves is unfortunately thrown into the garbage daily in Turkey, a waste that amounts to 1.7 billion on an annual basis. The factors in bread waste include excessive bread purchase, bad storage conditions and low quality of bread.

In consideration of all these factors, the sophomore students of our department organized an event for “recycling stale bread” under the guidance of the head of our Department, Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Akif Şen in order to draw attention to and help minimize bread waste in Turkey.

We thank the head of our Department president and our students for their valuable efforts.
